Ports & harbours
Status: Planning Stage
Promoter: South West Port
Project: Plans an enhancement at Berth 5A-6A of Mormugao Port
Location: Mormugao, dist. South Goa, Goa.
Project Details: According to MoEF sources, WAPCOS, Gurgaon is the consultant for EIA study. The port presently handles coal, limestone and steel products at Berth 5A-6A using mobile harbour cranes. Coal ships calling at the berth are generally up to Panamax (80,000 – 90,000 DWT) in size and will increase from 7.5 MTPA (Coal) to 14 million tons.
The company proposes to enhance bulk cargo handling of the facility (existing and under implementation) by modernising and utilising larger ships upto cape size (180,000 DWT) and checking feasibility of handling iron ore, limestone & unitized steel products. There will be no increase in the length of the waterfront which will remain 550 m as present and no increase in the storage area. The increased cargo would also be possible by deploying larger vessels up to 180,000 DWT (Cape Size) vessels. The grand total of capital cost is Rs. 3.36 billion.
Current Status: The project is waiting for environmental clearance and has a completion schedule of 6 months from zero date.
